Social Used To Be Social

  By | Thursday, 31 December 2015

Now, it’s just me...

Like the rest of the world, I’ve since migrated from MySpace to Facebook. For me, Facebook started off in a very similar way to the end of MySpace. I’d exchange funny posts on my friends’ Facebook walls. We’d share pictures, write goofy captions, and they’d become ongoing group jokes. The cyber blue, sleeve-cuffed “Like” button was new and shiny. So we’d click it at will. All was good in the world.

And then it happened. Facebook statuses.

I could let every one of my friends know how I felt at that exact moment. It became addicting. It was a method of self-expression that could be virally spread with the touch of a button (back then when my computer mouse actually had a button).

My Facebook wall started to become dominated by one person. Me. Just like that, social media started to feel a bit antisocial.

Sure, I had friends that would “Like” or comment on my posts. But it wasn’t the same. Some friends continue to share Internet-frenzy links on my wall, but they typically drown in the Sea of Me.

I miss the days when social media was truly social. When other friends dominated my digital presence. Because social media should be a way to stay connected with others. Not just to stay connected. For now, I’ll keep updating my status on my presidential run.

I’m Tall, Dark and Digital. And I approve this message.
